Update: National Conference

Update: National Conference

Hello Everyone,

Due to current restrictions across the country, and specifically in Washington, we have rescheduled the June 10-12th 2020 NAFTO National Conference.  Our annual conference will now be held at the Northern Quest Resort in Spokane, Washington, in June of 2021. It was clear to our board that postponing the conference a full 12 months was our best option. When considering restrictions on travel and training and the budgetary and staffing impact the pandemic has had on our agencies, we feel that the summer of 2021 gives all of us the best opportunity to attend. The new conference dates are June 9th, 10th, and 11th  2021.

I hope those reading this have been able to remain healthy through this health crisis.  NAFTO has fielded quite a few questions about how to adapt FTO programs to the new reality created by COVID-19.  We’ve decided that rather than responding to each email one-at a time, we could provide broader help to the FTO community.
 
We also created a email address to channel your input. Please submit your questions, ideas and thoughts to: covid-19@nafto.org.  We will do our best to provide updates as new ideas and concerns develop in this ever-evloving situation.

Update: Class Cancellations during COVID-19 Pandemic

Update: Class Cancellations during COVID-1

The NAFTO Executive Board has been closely monitoring national concerns, trends and directives related to our Country’s response to the COVID-19 epidemic. Taking all matters into consideration, we have decided to cancel all classes through May 31st, 2020. NAFTO staff will be contacting all agencies that this decision directly impacts. Registration for those classes have now been closed.

Covid-19 Update

Hello Everyone, 

Last March 12th and 13th I had the pleasure to host our NAFTO Management class in Elyria, Ohio. On the morning of the 13th, the Ohio Governor began to enact serious restrictions on public gatherings, schools and business as an early reaction to their state’s growing Covid-19 epidemic. We wrapped up another great class with so many great law enforcement professionals and began our trips home. Little did we know how much our lives would change in just two short weeks.

Class Cancellations during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

On behalf of NAFTO’s Executive Board, I wanted to send an update on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and the impact it will have on our day-to-day operations moving forward. Due to the fluid nature of what our country, states, and communities are experiencing we are closely monitoring recommendations from various state Department of Health Services and the Centers of Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to provide the most up-to-date adjustments.

Do You Invest In Your Employees?

After completing the law enforcement academy in 1995, I rode with veteran officers so I could learn how to do the job.  The department did not have a Field Training Program. I only learned from veteran officers who were supposed to “teach” new officers. 

Out of the three “veteran” officers I was learning from (rode with), only one actually taught me how to be a police officer; not to mention he was a very different teacher from the other two.

Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Interview

As one might guess, you can’t earn a lifetime achievement award for field training without dedicating a significant portion of your career towards the cause. This year, NAFTO bestowed Joyce McCoy with such an honor, and her path began over 30 years ago.
